Choose carbohydrates intentionally. You don’t have to remove them. Choose the amount and sources that work for your goals, appetite, preferences, and activity.

Then make it taste good. Because food you hate isn’t a sustainable fat-loss strategy.

Successful fat loss isn’t about eating the least food possible. It’s about building satisfying meals that make eating the right amount easier.

You see them on nutrition labels, fitness apps, meal plans, and probably all over your social media feed.

One person tells you to eat more protein. Someone else says carbs are the problem. Then someone tells you that healthy fats are essential.

So which one does your body actually need?

All three.

Protein, carbohydrates, and fat are called macronutrients because your body needs them in relatively large amounts. Each has a different job, and understanding those jobs makes nutrition a lot less confusing.

You don’t need to obsess over perfect percentages. You just need to understand what you’re putting on your plate — and why it’s there.

First: What Is a Macronutrient?

Almost everything you eat is made up of some combination of three macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fat.

They provide energy and raw materials your body uses to function.

Carbohydrates: The Energy Source

Carbohydrates have somehow become the dramatic one.

They’re blamed for weight gain, praised for athletic performance, removed from diets, added back in, and debated endlessly.

But carbohydrates are simply one of the body’s major sources of energy.

During digestion, many carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which can be used for energy. Your body can also store glucose as glycogen, particularly in the liver and muscles, for later use.

That makes carbohydrates especially useful during physical activity.

But not all carbohydrate-containing foods bring the same thing to your plate.

Broccoli contains carbohydrates. So do berries. So do lentils. And so do cookies.

Clearly, those foods aren’t nutritionally identical just because they share a macronutrient.

Bread makes you gain weight. Sugar makes you gain weight. Insulin “locks away fat.” And if the scale jumps after a carb-heavy weekend, that seems like pretty convincing evidence.

But there’s a problem: “Carbs make you gain weight” takes several different things happening inside the body and turns them into one overly simple explanation.

Carbohydrates can affect your appetite, blood sugar, insulin, water retention, and how easy it is to eat more calories than you need.

But eating a carbohydrate does not automatically mean gaining body fat.

First: Can Carbs Make You Gain Fat?

Yes. But so can fat. And so can protein, although it’s generally harder to overconsume.

Body fat increases over time when you consistently consume more energy than your body uses.

That’s a calorie surplus.

If your body needs 2,000 calories and you consistently give it more energy than it needs, that excess energy has to go somewhere.

Then Why Do People Lose Weight So Quickly When They Cut Carbs?

This is where things get interesting.

You cut carbs on Monday. By Friday, the scale says you’re several pounds lighter.

It’s tempting to think, “I just lost several pounds of fat.” Probably not.

At least some of that initial change is often water.

Your body stores carbohydrate as glycogen, primarily in your muscles and liver. Glycogen is stored along with water.

When carbohydrate intake drops substantially, glycogen stores can decrease — and some of the water stored alongside them goes too.

The scale drops.

When you eat considerably more carbohydrates again, glycogen and its associated water can increase. The scale goes back up.

That doesn’t mean you gained several pounds of body fat overnight.

Okay, But What About Insulin?

This is probably the biggest source of confusion around carbohydrates.

When you eat carbohydrates, many are broken down into glucose. Glucose enters your bloodstream, and your pancreas releases insulin.

Insulin helps move glucose out of the bloodstream so it can be used by cells or stored for later.

That is normal physiology.

Insulin also affects fuel storage and temporarily reduces the release of stored fat while your body deals with incoming nutrients.

But your body is constantly moving between storing and using energy throughout the day.

What matters for changes in body fat is what happens over time, not whether insulin increased after lunch.

A Strawberry and a Donut Are Both Carbs

And this is why putting every carbohydrate into one category makes very little sense nutritionally.

Strawberries contain carbohydrates. Broccoli contains carbohydrates. Lentils contain carbohydrates. Beans contain carbohydrates. Candy contains carbohydrates. Soda contains carbohydrates.
